The start of modern European History

When people look back over the past 150 years or so into the start of the modern European History era, few events have such a profound effect than the Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand by the freedom fighter Gavrilo Princip. His actions lead to the July Ultimatium which leads to the European powers into WWI. WWI in turn spurs the roaring 20's, the depression and finally WW2 and the Cold War. To stand at that exact spot, see the weapons and to see the original photos is really an amazing sight. I think a lot of people would miss the historical importance but not Megan and I.

The memorials of war

During the siege of Sarajevo, which was the longest siege of a Capitol City in modern times, the city was supplied by a huge tunnel as the only source of outside material. The tunnel came out in a house that looked like any others. Now the house has a section of the tunnel and a lot of information on the siege itself. We stopped in and got to enter a section of the tunnel. There is also a memorial in the Serbian section of the city which commorates the Bosniak forces killed by the Nazis. The Serbs do not take care of it as a symbolic gesture. We found a very sobering experience. We then visited a Jewish cemetary that the Nazis tried to destroyed but the folks of Sarajevo saved as much as they could.

Neretva River

I found this river to be so pretty that I forced Megan to stop and take photos. The water is sooo blue that my camera couldn't capture the color but I did snag a photo online of somebody's camera who did. Quite possibily the coolest drive I have ever taken.

A short side trip

So it turns out while we were in Sarajevo that the whole city was going to shut down for the day for the Muslim holiday Bayram (sp?). Megan and I decided to brave the Republika Srpska with its Cyrillic writing and beautiful scenery. We popped into Serbia for a short time and bought crazy wool clothes from a guy on the side of the road that I named "Poppi". He was definitely creeped out but we still came in like a pack of wildebeasts and bought awesome Serbian hats. At the border we got hustled for 30 Euro by the Serbian border police.
